December 1st – Time for Christmas Decorating!

img_0315Today is December 1st!  This means it is time to decorate for Christmas! Buying Christmas decorations can be so expensive. I feel like there is all of the pressure to be super trendy with your decor or to have everything right away. But with life and with interior decorating… it all takes time to put it together! Here is a little tutorial on what I prioritize when it comes to Christmas decorations:

  1. The Tree: I posted about buying the perfect tree last week. Today I want to focus on decorations for the tree. I treat ornaments as keepsakes. I want them to be something I am excited to bring out every year. My goal for buying ornaments is more than just pretty. Some of my favorite ornaments are gifts I have received from my sister – like this magnolia ornament below. I also have ornaments that are exact replicas of Betty and Dexter (Cat & Dog) and I adore them. The first Christmas Brendon and I were together, he began collecting for me the Reed and Barton Blown Glass 12 Days of Christmas Ornaments. We love getting those out each year. I also have a collection of birds in my tree because… I am obsessed with birds.
  2. Other Live Greenery: The second thing I began prioritizing was a tradition my mother passed down to me. She has gotten me paperwhite bulbs since I had my own apartment. Ever since then I always purchase paperwhite bulbs and a giant red amaryllis bulb. These flowers are beautiful live plants that are a breath of fresh air in the cold winter. I purchased matching crystal hurricanes for them and they sit proudly on my tables. I also have invested quite a bit in my wreaths. I use the same ribbon and berries each year. I purchased all of these at Michael’s with a good coupon.
  3. The couches: So my mom is obsessed with Christmas pillows and I always thought I would never go down that path. Well last year I invested in six Christmas pillows and one throw (two years ago, I purchased two christmas throws). I LOVE these needlepoint knit pillows with dogs on them. They were all the rage last year on One Kings Lane. I purchased my red sweater knit pillows and faux fur pillows and throw at Marshalls. These little additions made my house feel so much more holiday-ready.

*** This year I am purchasing Gold Antler candle holders from One King’s Lane to add to my Christmas decorations. I have some ruby glass ones right now – but these will be great for the table!

I hope this helps you prioritize your decoration purchases from year to year. I recommend you do not buy it all in one year because it will feel dated in a few and you will have to start all over again. Spend a little more to get high quality stuff you love and collect it slowly!
